Star Wars Uncut

The Star Wars Uncut project is finally complete! The entire film was reconstructed in fifteen-second sections. Each fifteen-second partition was produced by a different person.

The fact that a community would come together to collaborate on something like this is the reason I love science fiction. Fans are so incredibly passionate about what they love.

So creative!

Where do I fit into this and why do I want to be a television director? Why do I do what I do and what is it that will push me through what is sure to be a very difficult-to-navigate industry? Why in the world would I choose to spend my life calling lower thirds and setting up frames? It can’t be for the same reasons as a film director. There isn’t nearly the level creativity in the style of directing I want to go into. There isn’t necessarily much to be said for the content either. But for me the reason is simple: I want to be a leader; I want to be instrumental in providing the aforementioned powers of television (reliability, mass communication and connectiveness) to the public. I want to be a slave to my audience and provide them exactly what they expect in the manner they expect it. In a way, it’s like being a general of an army. You know what you’re expected to do and you do it. You may find a new and better way to go about doing it, and for that your creativity and innovation should be rewarded. But when it comes down to it, your job is to lead the troops to get the job done. And for me, I find the job of television to be one that is beautiful and worthwhile. Yes, I also love the work environment. I love the collaboration, I love the adrenaline, I love the stress and the grey hairs I’m going to get. But when it comes down to it, just as it does for film directors, it’s all about the meaning behind the work. It’s just that the meaning of television is far different from that of film. Art versus communication, the beauty of emotion versus the beauty of connectivity

Could not have said it better in a million years.  Beautiful, Becky!

Jordan: "That's so crazy that she's stepping down."

Me: "Why is that crazy? She was shot point blank in the head."

If you watch any part of the State of the Union address, make it this part.  A truly inspiring message from the president.  And if you don’t believe me, look at all the people tearing up in the audience.

Also, the award for best technical production of the SOTU goes to PBS hands down.  Gorgeous program.  This was homework, after all.  #tvgeekery

Well, break is almost over.  It was a nice break but it didn’t really feel like time off since I was constantly doing stuff.  Reflecting on these precious four weeks, I’ve decided that it was time well spent.  It’s been busy but it’s been so selfish and wonderful.  Here are some of the things I accomplished over break:

  • Worked 30 to 40 hours a week at the station.
  • Visited Washington DC for a hot second after Christmas.
  • Started the most daunting digital photo archival project and made good progress on it.
  • Completely and totally reorganized my digital life from project files to contact lists.  Impeccably and with redundancy..
  • Read the Steve Jobs book.
  • Completed a sweet freelance project for a partner at Telemundo.
  • Actually learned how a union works and reaped the benefits of it.
  • Edited many director tracks and worked on my web presence (though it doesn’t show yet).
  • Reinstalled a few operating systems - apartment entertainment system is even sweeter now.
  • Recovered from strep throat, successfully
  • Put the EVVY Vocal Showcase songs on iTunes as a podcast.
  • Watched all of Parks and Recreation, and am starting How I Met Your Mother.
  • Ran seven miles every week, even when it was 20 degrees.
  • SLEPT

Feeling accomplished and rested, and ready to commence Senior Year: Act Two.
